Tom Bawcock’s Eve
The festival is held in celebration and memorial of the efforts of Mousehole resident Tom Bawcock. According to legend there was a terrible storm so that no fishermen could leave the quay to fish. The village was swept with famine. Tom Bawcock risked his life to go out and managed to come back with enough to feed the village. All the fish were put into a big pie called “Stargazy pie”.
Every year on 23 December a festival takes place in the village, during this festival Star Gazy pie (a mixed fish, egg and potato pie with protruding fish heads) is eaten and depending on the year of celebration a lantern procession takes place.
